Doncaster Rock Royalty: Saxon
Graham Oliver was born in Mexborough. He was a founding member of heavy metal band Saxon from 1976 until 1996.
Graham was originally a member of the band Son of A Bitch with future Saxon bassist Steve Dawson. The band would later merge with another local band to become Saxon. Graham was the band’s main songwriter and guitarist. They had five top 20 albums in the UK, and performed with Metallica, Mötley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses.
Did you know- the 1984 film This is Spinal Tap was created after Harry Shearer’s time on tour with Saxon in 1982.
Graham Oliver is still performing and making music. He is also a renowned expert on Yorkshire ceramics.
The guitar below will feature in the new Danum Gallery, Library and Museum, alongside other Saxon memorabilia loaned by Graham Oliver.
