Introduction
March of 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the start of the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike. The miners’ strike was one of the largest examples of industrial action in British history. Mine workers from all across the country refused to work to protest against the closing of the mines and the job loss and damage to local economies and communities that these closures caused. Coal mining was one of Doncaster’s key industries, and thousands of miners from the area joined these strikes at their own personal cost. This exhibition, created by a group of Doncaster residents and ex-miners who lived through this important event, tells the story of the strike.
