Pit Sense
Pit Sense was a two-year project, giving different generations the opportunity to work together to explore Doncaster’s mining heritage. The project was run by Heritage Doncaster, funded by the Museum Association’s Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.
It focused on three ex-mining communities: Denaby Main, Woodlands and Hatfield/Stainforth; as together, these places tell the stories of the pits from the first sinking of the shafts, through to their closure.
With the support of local partners, we are ran workshops in libraries, schools, places of worship and other community hubs to bring people together around local mining history and the way it has shaped lives and landscapes today.
Participants were able to develop new skills and confidence in research, interpretation and the creative arts. Heritage Doncaster’s collection of mining objects, images and documents, where used to inspire a series of exhibitions in 2019.
