Arrivals: Frank Wallace
In Jamaica Frank worked as an apprentice joiner. He made his journey to the UK in August 1962, aged 19.
He was met at the airport by his father who had already set up home in Peckham, London. Frank lived in Peckham for a year where he worked on the railways, before moving to West Norwood and in 1965 decided to move to Scotland.
En route to Scotland Frank made an unscheduled stop in Doncaster to visit his brother. Frank never continued on his journey to Scotland and set up home in Doncaster.
He initially worked at Prosper De Mulder before returning to work at British Rail. After a year with British Rail, Frank took a job at International Harvesters. Whilst working at International Harvesters he became heavily involved with the trade union and became the Union Safety Representative. During his time in this role he met with many high ranking politicians including Harold Wilson, James Callaghan and Tony Blair.
After working at International Harvesters for 24 years Frank took retirement. He pursued his dreams of travel.
Frank enrolled in to the Northern College in Barnsley. In 2001 he was awarded a degree in Cultural and Social Studies aged 60.
Although technically retired Frank applied for a job as a caretaker at a Mexborough school. He continued working until he was 70 years old. Frank is now once more retired and fills his days with his three loves- his garden, dominoes and drinking!
