Claris Brown
Claris Brown left Jamaica on the 9th June 1959 to join her husband who had left for the UK in 1958.
Claris arrived at Southampton docks after a two week voyage on the SS Ascona. She was met by her husband and they made their way back to Doncaster.
The couple initially lived in rented accommodation with friends in Bentley before buying their first home together where they lived until 2015.
In 1960 Claris had the first of eight children. This put an end to Claris’ “five year plan” to return to Jamaica after making some money in the UK.
Settling into her new life in England Claris found work as an office cleaner at the Coal House in Waterdale. Further work opportunities included Cementation, Woolworths and Owen & Owen. Although Claris always longed to return to Jamaica she is how settled in England with her sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her.
