Arrivals: Inez Clarke
Inez arrived in England in November 1963 aged 21. Her father had paid £80 for a one way ticket with the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). She left her mother and brother behind in Jamaica.
Inez was met at the airport by her father and recalls the car journey from the airport to Leeds along the A1 and how it seemed to take forever. She also recalls the grey appearance of England’s buildings and the cold, having arrived in the middle of winter.
Inez had not worked in Jamaica but had lots of experience of helping her mother to make ends meet, so it did not take her long to find work on her arrival in England. Her first job was at Burton the Tailors before taking a job at Woolworths. She worked at Woolworths until she retired.
